“The United States will designate Antifa as terrorist organization“. To declare it with a Tweet the President of the United States, Donald Trump. Already yesterday the tycoon had pointed the finger at the anti-fascist movement of the antagonistic left, accusing it of being “Promoter of protests” resulting from the death of George Floyd at the hands of the Minneapolis police. Antifa is a militant and anti-fascist militant political movement, which includes groups of autonomous activists who are also ready for violent acts to fight anything they deem fascist, racist or far-right.
The announcement follows the statements made this morning by the secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, also convinced that the scenes of violence seen in recent days are linked to the radical left, although, he specified, “it remains to be clarified how peaceful protests have become violent”. A pattern, Pompeo continued, “already seen before, with infiltrating outsiders”, precisely “linked to Antifa”. Even the national security adviser, Robert O’Brian, as reported by the US media, told CNN that violent protests are “led by Antifa”. This, according to the councilor, “would have happened in Seattle, Portland and even Berkeley.” “I don’t even know if they can be defined as leftists – he added – But whatever they are, they are militants who burn our cities and we will get to the end”.
Trump and his administration have long targeted the group that repeatedly took to the streets during his presidency. A definitive stance, that of declaring them “terrorists”, already announced yesterday, when the President, defending “the right to demonstrate peacefully”, had condemned the violence, promising to “stop mass violence”. Floyd’s memory, he added, “has been dishonored by rioters, looters and anarchists.” An appeal finally launched also to the political authorities of Minneapolis and Minnesota, to whom Trump, shortly before leaving to attend the launch of the Crew Dragon shuttle, said he was “tougher”.
Support ilfattoquotidiano.it: never like now we need you.
In these weeks of pandemic we journalists, if we do our job with conscience, we do a public service. This is also why we are proud every day here at ilfattoquotidiano.it to offer hundreds of new content for free to all citizens: news, exclusive insights, expert interviews, surveys, videos and much more. All this work, however, has a great economic cost. Advertising, in a time when the economy is stagnant, offers limited revenues. Not in line with the access boom. This is why I ask those who read these lines to support us. To give us a minimum contribution, equal to the price of a cappuccino per week, fundamental for our work.
