“My husband has rough ways, but under the uniform is a tender“. So he said in an interview in 2018 Kellie Chauvin, former Minnesota beauty queen and wife of Derek Chauvin, the policeman who is accused of the murder of George Floyd, the 46-year-old African American who immobilized during a checkup on May 26, keeping him crushed on the ground with his knee pressed to his neck. Now the woman has filed for divorce, as her lawyers made known shortly after the news of her husband’s arrest: “Kellie Chauvin is devastated by the death of George Floyd and want to dissolve his marriage – they said. Although Ms. Chauvin has no children since her current marriage, she asks for safety and privacy for her children, (had from a previous husband, ed.) The parents and her whole family in this difficult moment “.
Those celebrated 10 years ago with Derek Chauvin were in fact the second wedding for Kellie: the woman, born in Laos and lived for years in a refugee camp because she belongs to the Hmong minority, she has two children from a previous husband with whom she had had an arranged marriage when she was only 17 years old and of whom she was widowed. As reported byNBC, the two had met in the hospital where she worked there, when he had accompanied a suspect during the shift. Now the policeman has been fired and is now in prison awaiting trial: he faces a 35-year sentence, the maximum possible sentence for the crimes that have been contested.
Support ilfattoquotidiano.it: never like now we need you.
In these weeks of pandemic we journalists, if we do our job with conscience, we do a public service. This is also why we are proud every day here at ilfattoquotidiano.it to offer hundreds of new content for free to all citizens: news, exclusive insights, expert interviews, surveys, videos and much more. All this work, however, has a great economic cost. Advertising, in a time when the economy is stagnant, offers limited revenues. Not in line with the access boom. This is why I ask those who read these lines to support us. To give us a minimum contribution, equal to the price of a cappuccino per week, fundamental for our work.
