The break also serves this: getting back in shape. Which for athletes does not mean, as for us, losing a few pounds, but closing the accounts with the big and small pains that accompany the career of a sportsman. Fabio Fognini thus decided to operate on his ankle, or rather on his ankles, which for several seasons now made him suffer.

A long postponed intervention, to which Fabio, n.11 of the world, underwent yesterday morning at the Nova Domus clinic in Ravenna, and successfully completed by Dr. Giovanni Lijoi. One of the leading experts in arthroscopic surgery who in the past has also operated the athlete Gian Marco Tamberi and the former Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso.

“For about three and a half years I have been suffering from a problem in my left ankle – Fognini had explained on his Instagram profile on the eve – It is a resentment with which I lived and, between ups and downs, I managed to manage it. Unfortunately, in the past two years, my right ankle has also started to wreak havoc. After more than two months of stop for the lockdown I started to train on the field and the problems that I hoped had resolved with rest, have come back. I had yet another specialist life and, after a careful discussion with my team, I decided to undergo an arthroscopic surgery on both ankles. I think it is the right thing to do in this moment of forced stop on the circuit ».

The surgery, as we said, went well, but it was necessary to proceed with general anesthesia because it involved major bleeding. “I’m fine. The operation was perfectly successful – the blue then said – It was impressive to see the bone fragments that took me off my feet. I did the right thing and I’m happy even if I’m a bit tried by the operation. “

In the right ankle the surgeon is working on a calcification, on the left it was more of a “cleaning”.

Today Fognini has returned to Arma di Taggia, where six weeks of stop and rehabilitation await him – in Liguria he will be with him the physiotherapist Giovanni Teoli – and the gradual return to the field, also helped by special equipment that Technogym has provided him with.

The stages
In a hurry, there is little: for now the end of the lockdown of the ATP circuit is set for July 31, but also the month of August is at risk and the possibility that it will start again only at the end of the year, if not even at the beginning 2021, are concrete. “The enemy to be fought”, explains Dr. Pier Francesco Parra, medical director of Fit “is now immobility. The important thing will be to mobilize the ankles as soon as possible and avoid the possible side effects of any such intervention. ” The 33 years just turned represent (symbolically) a critical age, but “Sewer” still wants to take off some satisfaction.

This year he has not even been able to defend the title won in 2019 in Monte Carlo, and the dream of a qualification for the ATP Finals – which will be played in Turin in 2021 – remains to be pursued after a couple of disappointments that have come on the woolen thread. Not to mention the ambitions in the Davis Cup that a national team that in theory can count on him, on the number 8 in the world Matteo Berrettini, on the experience of Andreas Seppi, the desire for redemption by Marco Cecchinato, the maturation of Lorenzo Sonego and youth by Jannik Sinner’s record, he can legitimately advance. “I can’t wait to go back to playing! – is Fabio’s message – I know you will support me in this period, I embrace you ».
