It was 1993 when Fiat launched the Point, a car that at the time found itself competing on the roads of the Bel Paese with Nissan’s Micra and Volkswagen’s Golf. Yet as much as the appeal of foreigners attracted Italians, the small utility car with a tricolor heart conquered the market, recording a boom in sales. In 1995 he was awarded the Car of the Year and from that moment on it became one of the most produced models of the Turin house.

Today, after 27 years, Fiat has decided that the time has come to change. The upheavals are no longer enough, like that of 2005 with the release of the Grande Punto: now we think of an heir.

With the most critical part of the emergency behind them, the car manufacturers are working hard to relaunch the market which has suffered a heavy setback. Among these there is certainly the Fiat of which in recent days there was talk about the possibility of launching a new crossover that should replace the 500L and 500X. In addition to this new project, according to what was leaked by the CEO of the Turin brand Oliver François, there would be that linked to the successor model of the Fiat Punto. The production of the economy car, among the best selling of the segment B, stopped two years ago, in 2018, and from that moment there is talk of an heir.

According to what Fiat CEO stated in an interview with the magazine Auto Express, the brand is working on the successor to the Fiat Punto who will use the platform CMP on which the Peugeot 208 and the Opel Corsa. Francois said that Fiat needs a B-segment car, which was abandoned after the production of the Punto in 2018 ended. This project, the CEO explains to Auto Express, has been postponed several times, but is now in development although it would be premature enough to talk about its characteristics. The CEO, therefore, has not unbalanced himself on the details of the vehicle, which at best could arrive between the end of 2021 and 2022.

In recent months in relation to this project, several rumors had spoken of an electric model alongside a petrol engine or even full electric that maybe now can take inspiration from the new one 500e. The possibility that the successor of the Punto may be launched in several versions with traditional engines is not entirely remote.
