F1 | Virtual GP Monaco: Russell wins at Leclerc’s home

On the day when F1 cars were supposed to race on the streets of the Principality, Formula 1 organized the fifth appointment with the Virtual GP who have been keeping fans company for these weeks. Weather conditions were particularly complicated for the protagonists of the race: a torrential rain moved the qualifications, launching a surprising Louis Deletraz in pole position. In the race, running on a dry track, however, it clearly imposed itself George Russell, the second triumph in this series of online races. With him on the podium came Esteban Gutierrez (Mercedes), second, and Charles Leclerc, third after a spectacular battle with Gutierrez and Alex Albon. Fair performance for Valtteri Bottas, who made his debut in virtual races and reached 11th place.

The Englishman resolved the dispute at the start, burning Deletraz and fleeing immediately on the run, chased after a few laps by the pair of hosts, behind the wheel of the two Ferraris. Without the damage to the active single seaters they have been seen several spectacular overtaking attempts, almost always ended with a contact and a spin for one (or more) of the parties involved. Penalties were of great importance, affecting practically the entire grid. They were assigned almost exclusively for the overcoming of track limits, especially at the chicane exiting the tunnel.

The young Williams house talent, once taking the lead, was also favored by the race strategies. The brothers Leclerc and Esteban Gutierrez in fact “painted” early, finding themselves then bottled in a sort of bumper car with Lando Norris, Pietro Fittipaldi and Alex Albon, who remained delayed in the first laps and who had not yet made their obligatory stop. This allowed Russell to have more than 30 seconds of advantage over his pursuers, thus being able to change tires in total relaxation. Impressed the final detachment from Russell to the opponents: on the track, not counting the penalties, the Englishman won with 39 seconds ahead, in a 39-lap race.
