Ennio Tasciotti, the scientist who explains the coronavirus with videos


Where are we really at with the coronavirus vaccine? Can the virus be transmitted by air? How important are humidity and temperature in the infection? What are the serological tests for? And now that I go back to the office do I risk the infection? So many questions that all Italians have asked themselves in recent months and the answers have not always been so precise. A little bit because Sars-CoV -2 is new and it is giving us many surprises, a little bit because it’s undeniable that there has been confusion with so much information. In the midst of the pandemic emergency (and targeted by questions from acquaintances and friends) he also found himself Ennio Tasciotti, 42 years old, graduated in molecular biology from the Normale di Pisa and specialized in molecular medicine, brain returning from the United States with the idea of ​​activating a center on longevity and well-being in Italy.

The video lessons

But the coronavirus has blocked the world. Many asked me for an opinion on the last article read, on how much masks are needed, on how really you risk contagion, if there are dangers to returning to normal life – says Tasciotti who chose Milan as the operational base – then I decided to shoot a series of videos, in understandable language to give simple answers to the many questions. Tasciotti puts his hands forward: I am not a virologist nor an epidemiologist. I am a scientist who studies nanoparticles, which have size, structure, composition similar to the virus. I can read and understand scientific literature very well precisely because of the work I do. The video lessons I shot are based only on published scientific literature, without venturing on something not really known. a journey to help those who wish to understand the enemy in front of us.

The mistakes made

The videos were published on the scientist’s Instagram and Facebook page and on the GQ Italia website, obtaining more than 200 thousand views. Tasciotti for years directed the Department of Nanomedicine, where he experimented with targeted nanotherapies for the treatment of inflammatory diseases, and then the Center for Regenerative Medicine of the Research Institute of the Methodist Hospital in Houston developing biomaterials for the regeneration of skeletal muscle tissues. Little is known about this virus. I think the mistake that was made was not having had the courage to answer: “I don’t know” to some questions but always wanting to give certain answers even when this is not yet possible.

The many questions

With the start of phase two, many have asked themselves: but can I get infected outdoors? The gathering is not only dangerous indoors but also outdoors because we emit potentially contagious particles even when we speak. Also when we do physical activity we breathe more deeply and emit more particles. Finally, group smoking can be dangerous because you remove the mask and the fumes are deeper and release more droplets into the environment. So much has been said about hand washing as prevention. Disinfectants such as amuchina have been snapped up: But also soap and water is enough because the soap molecule breaks the lipid shell of the virus. What about bars and restaurants? There is a greater risk of infection through the breath because the mask is removed and common objects are touched. Outdoor places are preferred because the chances of encountering higher viral loads are lower.

The future

Tasciotti’s intention to continue on this path and on his social networks responds directly to those who have doubts or curiosities. Living with the virus is part of our daily lives and I want to continue helping those who are unable to interpret the technical language of professionals. In these closing months I have found many people grateful for what I do and have appreciated the clarity. People have respect for science if you make it clear to them.
