There Costa Rica becomes the first state in Central America to allow gay marriages: a ruling of the Costa Rica Supreme Court, the highest court in the country, which in 2018 declared the ban in force “unconstitutional and discriminatory”. The parliamentarians had 18 months to abolish it, changing the law, which expired at midnight today (8 am, local time).

President, Carlos Alvarado, announced that “same-sex couples and their families will have the same rights as any other couple or family in this country. Together, under the same flag, we build a better nation“. Looking at the entire South American continent, Costa Rica is the sixth country to make marriages between citizens of the same possible: last year it was the turn of Ecuador, and parts of Mexico.

THE Planned celebrations have been canceled due to the coronavirus epidemic: in their place, a special program on lgbtqi rights was broadcast on public TV and online. A lot of couples have scheduled the their wedding – privately and without celebrations, given the emergency situation – just for today. How Alexandra, 29 years old, and Aritza, 24, the very first to say yes, eight minutes after midnight in front of a notary from the Puntarenas district.

we need you.

In these weeks of pandemic we journalists, if we do our job with conscience,
we do a public service. This is also why we are proud every day here at ilfattoquotidiano.it
to offer hundreds of new content for free to all citizens: news, exclusive insights,
expert interviews, surveys, videos and much more. All this work, however, has a great economic cost.
Advertising, in a time when the economy is stagnant, offers limited revenues.
Not in line with the access boom. This is why I ask those who read these lines to support us.
To give us a minimum contribution, equal to the price of a cappuccino per week,
                        fundamental for our work.

But now we are the ones who need you.
Because our work has a cost.
We are proud to be able to offer hundreds of new content every day for free to all citizens.
But advertising, in a time when the economy is stagnant, offers limited revenues.
Not in line with the boom in access to ilfattoquotidiano.it.
For this reason I ask you to support us, with a minimum contribution, equal to the price of a cappuccino per week.
A small but fundamental sum for our work. Help us out!
