Coronavirus, Luxottica gives employees a badge to track contacts


BELLUNO – The new Luxottica management model of Phase 2 and prevention in its workplaces takes place under the scientific patronage of the Department of Molecular Medicine of the University of Padua and of the Laboratory of Microbiology and Virology University / Hospital of Padua. With the appropriate adaptations, it will be progressively extended to all locations worldwide. With the new “buffer protocol” that points to “intelligentì” tests, Luxottica it will offer the entire company population including offices, factories and shops free of charge the opportunity to undergo, in a first phase on a voluntary basis, a swab. The initiative, which started on 11 May in the offices of Agordo and Sedico (Belluno), will be aimed at all the Italian employees of the group, to their family members and, with the extension of operational capabilities in the execution of tampons, even to some local communities.
Luxottica will make use of a new Covid-19 Laboratory directed by Andrea Crisanti at the University / Hospital of Padua, created with the initial contribution of 1.5 million from the Leonardo Del Vecchio Foundation, which can manage up to 40 thousand diagnostic swabs per month. The first test phase will be aimed at isolate asymptomatic positivesexplains the company, which in parallel with the University is developing a new digital system to dynamically map the level of exposure to the risk of contagion of each individual employee. This introduces a Covid-19 algorithm, a platform that will feed over time with relevant information to identify in real time, “respecting employee privacy” the most sensitive joints of the corporate community, to be eventually subjected to diagnostic tests. Luxottica will ask the workers to supply and update through a questionnaire a set of useful information to classify contexts and behaviors at risk, to be crossed with other variables, such as the daily epidemiological data of the municipalities of residence or domicile.
The company will therefore launch in the coming days in the main factory in Agordo a new experiment that provides the adoption of a “proximity badge” to help employees observe social distance and to anonymously manage any contacts at risk. Equipped with a digital sensor but without geolocation function, it will notify employees with an audible alarm of exceeding the minimum distance of 1.5 meters from any work colleagues, anonymously sending the contact data to a central database. Each employee will be identified in the system by an encrypted code and will generate over time its own history of close contacts in the workplace. If a case of positivity is identified, this information will make it possible to intervene in isolating potential outbreaks and subject workers potentially exposed to infection to a new buffer.
With the new project “we will be able to monitor the most vulnerable points of the health protection belt developed by the company day by day, and to intervene preventively to limit any problems”, says Andrea Crisanti. «We hope that this approach can contribute to the emergence and a better understanding of the asymptomatic phenomenon, which is critical for the entire health system, and that this innovative solution can be adopted by other local production companies. When the University’s potential for innovation and knowledge, also facilitated by a state of emergency, meets the best of entrepreneurship – adds Crisanti – absolutely unexpected horizons and opportunities open and of such a breadth that they push us to think that a solution positive to this crisis is possible. Together with Luxottica and thanks to the generous contribution of President Del Vecchio and its Foundation, the University of Padua and Uoc of Microbiology and Virology of the Hospital Company has developed an innovative and sustainable model to prevent the transmission of Covid-19 to places of work combining passive safety protocols and active surveillance measures. Thanks to the systematic use of targeted molecular diagnosis (tampons), the support of IT applications and the indispensable collaboration of employees, in this case the public-private collaboration leads to the synthesis of often contrasting needs such as economic-production, public health and protection of workers’ rights and safety, by tracing a shared route to face an inevitable period of forced coexistence with the virus », concludes the professor.
