Of the cases recorded in this way, at least 1,937,200 people were healed. The United States is the country most affected in terms of the number of deaths and cases, with 95,886 deaths in just over 1.6 million cases. The United Kingdom follows with 36,393 deaths, Italy (32,616), Spain (28,628) and France (28,289). In terms of contagions, however, Brazil has overtaken Russia and is in second place after the United States with 330,890 cases.

United States, almost 96 thousand dead. And Trump wears the mask

The United States hit 1,600,481 coronavirus positive cases and 95,886 deaths yesterday, according to the independent count of Johns Hopkins University. This means 25,417 more infections than on Thursday and 1,225 new deaths. New York State remains the great epicenter of the pandemic in the United States with 358,154 confirmed cases and 28,853 deaths, a figure similar to that of Spain and only below the United Kingdom and Italy. In New York City alone, 21,086 people died. New York State is followed by New Jersey, with 152,579 confirmed cases and 10,985 deaths; then Illinois, with 105,444 infections and 4,715 deaths, and Massachusetts, with 90,889 positives and 6,228 deaths so far. Other states with a large number of deaths are Michigan with 5,158, Pennsylvania with 5,010, California with 3,660 or Connecticut with 3,637. The provisional death toll – 95,886 – is close to the initial estimates of the White House, which has projected between 100,000 and 240,000 deaths in the United States at the most, but has already far exceeded the most optimistic calculations that made “a posteriori” the President Donald Trump, between 50,000 and 60,000 dead. Since then, however, Trump – who appeared in Michigan for the first time yesterday in Michigan – has repeatedly increased his predictions to recognize in his latest calculation that the final figure is likely to be between 100,000 and 110,000 deaths. The Institute of Health Metrics and Assessments (IHME) of the University of Washington, whose predictive models for the evolution of the pandemic are often examined by the White House, estimates that in early August the epidemic will have determined more of 143,000 deaths in the United States.

And the mayor of Baltimore doesn’t want the president

The mayor of Baltimore asks Donald Trump to review his plans for Memorial Day, when President and First Lady Melania Trump are expected in the city to celebrate American soldiers who have fallen in the war. “I ask the president to think again”: the visit scheduled for Monday sends a “negative message to the citizens of Baltimore, to whom I am asking to stay at home” because of the coronavirus and to go out are for “essential reasons”, says the mayor by Baltimore Bernard Jack Young. The first citizen then explains how the visit would oblige the use of police forces which, instead, should be intended to guarantee social distancing between citizens and to check that the shops remain closed on the long weekend. Memorial Day falls on May 25th. “We don’t need to spend our resources on the president’s visit while we’re” still in a lockdown: “I think he’s breaking the law,” Young highlights.

China announces: no new case for the first time

China has reported zero new coronavirus cases for the first time since it started reporting data in January. The virus first surfaced in Wuhan city at the end of last year, cases have dropped dramatically from the peak in mid-February when the country appears to have brought the virus largely under control. The official death toll in the country is 4,634, well below the number of victims in much smaller countries. Doubts have been expressed about the reliability of Chinese numbers, the amount of information that Beijing has shared with the international community is being questioned. The news of zero contagions comes the day after the opening of the National People’s Congress, in which Premier Li Keqiang said that the country “has achieved important strategic results in our response to Covid-19”. However, he warned that the country still faces “immense” challenges. In recent months, Beijing has denied the allegations of cover-up strenuously, insisting that it has always shared information in a timely manner with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other countries.

Brazil overtook Russia in the number of new coronavirus cases yesterday after registering 20,803 new infections in one day and became the second most affected country in the world by the pandemic. The number of cases in Brazil today has reached 330,890, ranking only behind the United States, which has over 1.5 million infections, according to the budget released by the Ministry of Health and reflecting the growing progress of disease in the country. The Latin American giant reached 21,048 deaths, having recorded 1,001 new deaths from the previous day, a slightly lower number than the 1,188 record recorded Thursday. The most affected state so far is São Paulo, a region where 46 million people live and which has recorded 76,871 cases and 5,773 deaths, which represent almost 30% of all deaths in the country. In number of deaths, behind Sao Paulo, there is Rio de Janeiro (3,657), whose capital of the same name has a mortality rate for Covid-19 of 12.7%, almost double the national average of 6.5% , as reported by the Brazilian State Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) with data from the Ministry of Health.

Guatemala, total curfew until Monday

In Guatemala, a total curfew from yesterday afternoon until Monday to try to control the spread of coronavirus, at a time when daily infections have exploded in the country. The measure was announced last week by President Alejandro Giammattei, who stressed that general confinement will serve to identify the “active outbreaks” of the coronavirus. In total closure, only the delivery of food and medicines at home will be allowed, in addition to the movement of health personnel and other services considered essential. Guatemala has registered over 2,500 cases of Covid-19 in two months, about fifty dead. The increase in infections in the past week – 100 cases per day since Wednesday – has already alarmed the country’s hospital estate.

Latin America, 670,000 infections and 37,000 deaths

In the last 24 hours, a new strong leap forward in the consequences of the coronavirus in Brazil has characterized Latin America, which has officially become “new outbreak of the pandemic” for the World Health Organization (WHO). In the region, 672,770 are infected today, of which 37,021 are dead. This is what emerges from a statistic elaborated by ANSA on the basis of the known data of 34 between Latin American nations and territories. Brazil, which as mentioned has jumped to second place in the world rankings behind the United States, has reached 330,890 infected and 21,048 dead. Peru was followed at a distance (111,698 and 3,244), while Chile (61,857 and 630) rose in third place, having overtaken Mexico (59,567 and 6,510). Then follow Ecuador (35.828 and 3.056), Colombia (18.330 and 652), Dominican Rep. (13.989 and 456), Panama (10.116 and 291), Argentina (10.649 and 433) and Bolivia (5.187 and 215).

In Africa, 100,000 positive cases of coronavirus have been exceeded. The WHO has made it known. “For now, a high number of deaths have been spared to the continent that have devastated other areas of the world,” said Matshidiso Moeti, WHO regional director for Africa. Currently there are 3,100 confirmed deaths. In Europe when the threshold of 100 thousand cases was exceeded there were 4,900 deaths. A trend that could be attributed to the fact that 60% of the African population under the age of 25. Moeti, however, warned that African health systems are fragile and would not be able to cope with sudden spikes in cases, adding that further tests are needed. South Africa, which has the highest number of cases in Africa, has reached 20,000 positive cases while Lesotho has only two, according to the African Center for Disease Control.

France, religious services will resume today

Hand disinfection and mandatory mask, filtering at the entrance: religious ceremonies will be able to resume today respecting the conditions for the containment of the coronavirus epidemic established by a decree. This text complements a May 11 decree on measures to combat Covid-19 in the context of a state of health emergency. The minister of the interior and the leaders of religions agreed during a meeting “on the measures to be taken to ensure everyone’s health security,” explained the ministry in a statement shortly before the publication of the decree. This concerted action was imposed on the government after the State Council ordered Monday to lift within eight days the total ban on religious ceremonies contained in the decree of 11 May. If the objective of a generalized resumption of religious ceremonies remains on June 3, the ministry recalls, it will therefore be possible to gradually celebrate religious offices once the decree is published. The managers of the places of worship and the organizers of ceremonies must in particular make sure that the faithful respect the prescriptions. At the entrance of the place of worship, a person will also have to adjust the flows so as not to exceed a maximum frequency indicator. The measures apply to any person aged eleven or older who enters or remains in these places. “The prefects of the department can prohibit the opening or order the closure of a place of worship if these rules are not respected,” said the ministry.
