The drones painted a flooded Venice in November, today a Venice emptied of Covid. Who has never left are the seagulls, in Venetian “cocai”, and the residents. The restart in the lagoon then also begins with a startup that in a few months is taking flight as the name it has given itself, Cocai Express. This is the first home food delivery service born as a non-profit project (delivering hot meals from restaurants to Venetians in the lockdown phase) and now ready to become like the giants Just Eat, Deliveroo, Glovo, Foodora.

Unlike these international intermediaries, however, Cocai’s philosophy is hyperlocal, as Giovanni Torcellan, a 28-year-old Venetian, one of the four founders explains: «The idea was born in the darkest and most paralysis period. After the flood, the coronavirus. Two phenomena that have isolated our city which, without tourists, will have to rethink its own identity starting from the citizens. I have worked in the restaurant business for years as a bar manager, also abroad. Guglielmo Zanini is a former professional rugby player, Tommaso Ramadoro has a degree in mathematics and works for the consultancy Prometeia and finally Stefano Majocco, brings an experience to Amazon. We met one evening and decided to create a Facebook page proposing ourselves as a runner free of charge for the few restaurants that had the kitchens open for takeaway but not the people for delivery. We equipped ourselves by buying the thermal bags and we started with a couple of places in the Rialto area ».

Now there are already twenty restaurants, fish stalls in the market and affiliated shops, and 30 boys who, strictly on foot between fields and streets, bring home the dishes in four areas (Rialto-San Polo-Frari, San Marcuola- Cannaregio, Fondamenta Nuove- Santi Apostoli, San Marco). 8000 deliveries made. And with these numbers the first sponsorships also arrived: the DirectaPlus company from Como, which deals with developing application to graphene, offered them some thermoregulating shirts and soon also the masks. The Retail Design studio of the Venetian architect Paolo Lucchetta instead provided consultancy for the brand.

However, what hasn’t changed is the strong idea of the community: «We don’t fear the arrival of the competitors. Deliveroo has recently started its affiliation campaign but our service, at low costs, wants above all to be useful to residents (often elderly), and to favor small local realities that otherwise would risk becoming extinct forever. Another social aspect concerns the recruitment of young people for deliveries: young students or young people who worked in tourism who are now unemployed. ». Another Venice is therefore possible and, after the phoenix, it rises from the wings of this young seagull.
