Case Zaky and Regeni: the Emilia Romagna Region terminates an agreement with Egypt

Emilia-Romagna stops the agreement with Egypt on education and training, because “there are no conditions for ratification”. The reason? The lack of truth about the Giulio Regeni case and the detention of Patrick Zaki. “We cannot consider our relations with the Egyptian government normal”, says Elly Schlein, vice-president of the Region, who spoke today at the Legislative Assembly to ask to suspend the examination of the agreement, which today should have been ratified by the Parliament member of the avenue Aldo Moro.”The government has decided to ask for suspension of the examination of this provision – explains Schlein – which concerns an agreement on education and professional training involving a fund belonging to the Egyptian Council of Ministers”.
At this moment, says Schlein, “we do not see the conditions for ratifying the agreement, because we cannot consider our relations with the Egyptian government normal when we have been asking for truth and justice for Giulio Regeni for 52 months, without getting answers, and when from 7 February Patrick Zaki, enrolled in the Alma Mater of Bologna, is detained in an Egyptian prison until a date to be destined without having clarity on the reasons for this detention and without news on his psycho-physical conditions, which concern us “.

For this reason, says the vice-president of the Region, “we join the voice of those who ask for their release and respect for their fundamental rights”. Consequently, “we ask that the Assembly take the necessary time to re-examine it, if we share the need for this postponement and a supplement for reflection”. The agreement with Egypt was thus postponed to committee, with the vote in favor of the majority and the abstention of the center-right.
