Brusaferro: “Data suggest second Covid wave”

“For the scenarios that we imagine, in autumn, a pathology such as Sars-cov-2, which is transmitted by droplets, can be more spread and can be confused with other respiratory symptoms” and “the famous second wave hypothesis is connected to this, which, from a technical-scientific point of view, is a given objective ”. So the president of the Higher Institute of Health (ISS), Silvio Brusaferro, in the hearing of the Budget Commission. “In the autumn, respiratory infections spread, fewer hours of sunshine and outdoor activities and more circulation increases.”

Brusaferro stressed that caution is needed, despite the fact that the data is improving across the country: “We have overcome the peak curve of the infection, we are in the downhill part and in a phase of control of the situation, but it requires special attention”: This is because “The virus is still present and individual behaviors are the most effective measures to reduce its circulation, because the number of people who have come into contact with the virus is limited, even if it varies from region to region. The many people who did not come into contact, and therefore susceptible to the virus, are a reservoir for its spread ”.

Regarding interregional and inter-European movements, which should start again from June 3, the president of the ISS said that “we are facing a challenge that will be even more important because the mobility between regions and also the international one will be liberalized”. Of fundamental importance will be the quality of the tracking: “This will require an even more careful ability to monitor and respond to outbreaks”.
