Two inquiries from the Guardian he was born in Daily MailLast week, they reported that at the end of March, during restrictions on movements similar to those decided in Italy, Cummings had moved with his wife and their four-year-old son from London to Durham, in the north of England, where his parents live. The trip had been made when Cummings’ wife had already manifested the symptoms of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, and a few days before Cummings himself became ill.

Cummings had justified his trip with the need to get help from his parents, to take care of the son in case both he and the mother got sick. It was later discovered that Cummings had made another outing with his wife, visiting a popular location a few dozen kilometers from Durham, Barnard Castle. Cummings defended himself by saying that he had decided to take a short car trip with his wife to make sure he could make the longest trip to London (because he had vision problems).
Police said the latter was a violation of the rules, adding however that Cummings does not appear to have violated the rules on physical spacing. The police later specified that it does not intend to take retroactive action for this violation, as it would not for any other ordinary citizen.
