BMW 5 Series 2020: features, interior, hybrid engines and images


BMW has removed the veils on the restyling of the 5 Series. From a stylistic point of view, there are many innovations that characterize the new BMW 5 Series. In particular, the exterior design has been changed to offer a touch of sportiness more. The biggest differences they are at the front level where it stands out the grill with the double kidney which is now taller and wider. In addition, the new thinner design of the LED headlights (Led Matrix and Laserlight variants as optional) contributes to the character of the car.

Touch-ups were also made to the bumper design with new vents. On the other hand, on the other hand, they are present for all versions i trapezoidal tailpipes. The rear lights and integrated brake lights create a three-dimensional effect. On request the M Sport package which allows to offer the car a significantly more muscular look both in the front and in the rear thanks to specific aerodynamic choices.

The novelties of the restyling yes focus more on infotainment which has been significantly updated and improved thanks to the introduction of the version 7 of the operating system. Available on Standard Control Display with 10.25-inch or 12.3-inch screens (optional). There are also new digital services such as BMW Maps, OTA updates, personal assistant and much more.

Finally, in addition to compatibility with Apple CarPlay comes the one with Android Auto. Internally, the new sports steering wheel in standard leather with multifunction buttons, automatic climate control with extended functions and the new arrangement of controls on the central console.


The new BMW 5 Series is able to offer occupants a very high level of safety thanks to the presence of advanced ADAS. For example, the lane departure warning stands out, which now has the lane return function. The new is an option Driving Assistant Professional with active navigation with the help of Lane Change Assistant. Always among the accessories the Parking Assistant with additional reverse assistance function.


One of the main novelties of the restyling concerns the expansion of the presence of electrified engines. Many more Plug-in versions are available to customers in addition to the Mild Hybrid versions. In this way, the manufacturer expects to offer more efficient models in terms of consumption and polluting emissions.

More specifically, the BMW 530e and 545e will be equipped with Plug-in technology. The first, also in the Touring and xDrive versions, features a powertrain consisting of a 135 kW / 184 HP thermal engine combined with an 80 kW / 109 HP electric unit. The combined power reaches 215 kW / 292 hp (420 Nm). Autonomy in electric only from 53 to 67 Km depending on the version.

The second, only xDrive version, is characterized by a 210 kW / 286 HP thermal engine combined with an 80 kW / 109 HP electric motor. The total power is 290 kW / 394 hp (600 Nm). Battery autonomy between 54 and 57 km. The BMW eDrive Zone digital service is available in all Plug-in hybrid models.

For all four and six cylinder models instead, there is the Mild Hybrid 48 V hybrid system which provides an additional 8 kW / 11 HP of additional thrust to improve the efficiency of the engines. The new BMW 5 Series is offered in the models: 520i (135 kW / 184 hp), 530i (185 kW / 252 hp), 540i (245 kW / 333 hp), 520d (140 kW / 190 hp), 530d (210 kW / 286 HP) and 540d (250 kW / 340 HP).

Also present the sports version M550i xDrive characterized by the presence of the powerful V8 4.4-liter twin-turbo engine with 245 kW / 333 hp (450 Nm). All engines have one eight-speed Steptronic transmission. The BMW xDrive all-wheel drive is offered as standard or as an option for all variants, with the exception of the entry-level petrol version.
