Bennacer, Florentino, Szoboszlai … How will Rangnick’s midfield be set?

What will Milan’s midfield be next year? To date it is difficult to answer, thanks to the great uncertainties related to the period but also to what will be the choices of the (likely) next technical guide. Almost certainly at the end of the season both Biglia and Bonaventura will say goodbye, both of which are about to expire, but also Lucas Paquetà seems destined to leave, regardless of what the formula will be (more likely a loan than a permanent sale). The only fixed point to date seems to be Ismael Bennacer, which gives an idea of how full the next median market should be.

DEFINED ROLES – In recent weeks, and also in the last few hours, there have been three names that have been most closely associated with Milan: Florentino, Szoboszlai and Bakayoko. The Portuguese midfielder has been identified as Bennacer’s ideal companion, so much so that there is talk of a principle of agreement with Benfica (even if the Rossoneri club hold back). From Portugal there is talk of a two-year loan with the right of redemption for the young talent, a 1999 class that Milan had already dealt with in January. Florentino is a breakaway player and would be perfect in a median for two, a different speech for Szoboszlai, which can be placed as a half wing or at most in a more advanced position, given the tactical similarity to Milinkovic-Savic. We already know Bakayoko: in 2018/19 he did great alongside Kessie but he struggled a lot as an interior. The Frenchman would clearly be an alternative to Florentino, in a central midfielder role. Consequently, taking all this into account, how will Rangnick or who will intend to play for him?

MEDIAN THREE OR ANOTHER IDEA? – If Milan were to actually bet on Szoboszlai, and the interest is really concrete, it is difficult to think that the formation of the future will play with a median for two. It would be absurd to invest heavily for the Hungarian and then adapt him to a role not his, such as the central or the offensive outside … The feeling is that a return to the midfield is being studied at three, which would not close the doors to Florentino , but would see him in a position of greater responsibility as the only low vertex, with Bennacer possibly decentralized as internal. Can Bennacer-Florentino-Szoboszlai be a suitable midfield trio? On paper yes, but as said it would imply corrections and great patience. Different matter if you studied a different game system: a sort of 4-2-2-1-1 with a pair of screen midfielders (Florentino and Szobolozai), two slightly advanced interiors (Szobolozai and Calhanoglu), a second striker (probably Rebic) and a center forward. A hypothesis to consider especially if a right back with great strength and drive was also purchased.
