ROME – He was the first to match the legend Jesse Owens. Bobby Joe Morrow, who died at the age of 84 at his home in San Benito, Texas, at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics won the gold medal in the 100, 200 and 4×100 meters, a feat hitherto successful only to the legendary sprinter at the Games of the 1936 in Berlin. An exploit later made by another American, Carl Lewis (gold medal also in the long jump, like Owens, in Los Angeles in 1984), and by the Jamaican Usain Bolt.Morrow was named sportsman of the year by Sports Illustrated magazine for 1956, ahead of baseball player Mickey Mantle and boxer Floyd Patterson. He retired from athletics in 1958, before making a brief return in 1960 to try in vain to qualify for the Rome Olympics. In October 2006 the Bobby Morrow Stadium was dedicated to him in San Benito, with 11,000 seats.
