Reinforced security for FC Bruges-Manchester United given the rivalry between the fans

The Europa League round of 16 first leg between FC Bruges and Manchester United, considered a match at “very high risk“Thursday will be the subject of reinforced security measures, according to the mayor (mayor) of Bruges.

The Bruges police have taken various precautionary measures in the run-up to the match between the two clubs, given the rivalry between fans of the two teams.

In August 2015, the arrival of the English club caused violent clashes between supporters. The police want to avoid further incidents. The police expect 1,500 English supporters.

According to the Belga agency, the meeting is considered to be at risk because of the clashes which had broken out between the supporters of the two clubs during their play-off in the Champions League in 2015.

To avoid such incidents, the local police contacted the Flemish public transport company De Lijn and the taxi companies in Bruges to ask them not to “mix“supporters of both clubs.

In addition, catering establishments within a kilometer radius of the stadium and in certain areas of the city center are not allowed to serve drinks in glass.

Supermarkets and night shops were also asked not to promote alcohol that day and to respect the ban on glass.

The majority of English supporters are expected to spend the night in the center of Bruges. The local police will therefore deploy additional men and also carry out checks on the roads leading to the stadium.
