VVV striker Giakoumakis already scores after 17 minutes on debut for Greece | International football

With nine goals in his first nine matches, Giorgos Giakoumakis has made an excellent start at VVV. The club from Venlo took him over from AEK Athens in August for 200,000 euros. The good start in the Netherlands earned Giakoumakis an invitation from John van ‘t Schip, the national coach of Greece. Giakoumakis previously played three games for Young Greece, in which he did not score.

Greece won 2-1 against Cyprus in Athens. Giakoumakis was allowed to stay the entire match from national coach Van ‘t Schip and his assistant Aron Winter. Willem II striker Vangelis Pavlidis stayed on the bench throughout the match.

In League C of the Nations League, Greece will play in and against Moldova on Sunday. Three days later, Van ‘t Schip’s team closes the group stage with a home game against Slovenia, which is the leader in group 3 with 10 points. Greece follows as number two with 8 points. Greece did not qualify for the European Championship.
