Pieter Weening does not get a new contract with Trek-Segafredo. The Dutchman, who had an expiring contract, had been driving for the American formation since this year.
Trek-Segafredo presented the Dane Jakob Egholm on Wednesday as the last acquisition and thus has completed the selection for next season. There is no room for Weening in it.
The 39-year-old Weening still had the chance to get a new contract at the restart of the cycling season in August. However, he has been unable to convince Trek’s leadership in recent months.
The single stage winner in the Tour de France (2005) still rode the Giro d’Italia in October as the servant of leader Vincenzo Nibali, but Weening fell over a water bottle in the fifth stage and was forced to leave the race.
It is not yet known what Weening will do next season. Bauke Mollema and Koen de Kort will drive for Trek-Segafredo again in 2021.
