Ten Hag is disappointed with the extra game: ‘that might have been logical’

Ajax coach Erik Ten Hag is disappointed that his club has not been released for the next round of the KNVB Cup. The team from Amsterdam drew FC Utrecht on Saturday evening, adding another match to the already very busy schedule.

AZ and Feyenoord have been released, while Ajax and PSV have to come into action in the second round of the KNVB Cup. “Perhaps it would have been logical to give the European playing clubs an extra round. But the KNVB has decided otherwise and so we have to deal with it”, Ten Hag tells. The Telegraph.

“Our players are already the most taxed”, Ten Hag continues. Ajax will play nine matches in the period from November 23 to December 23, of which the cup match against FC Utrecht on December 15 is one of them. Against Heracles Almelo (5-0 win, ed.) Noussair Mazraoui, Zakaria Labyad and Davy Klaassen fell out injured, causing the discussion about overload to start again.

“When compiling the selection, we deliberately kept it large to be able to somewhat prevent overload in the busy schedule”, says Ten Hag, who does what he can to keep his players fit. “I consciously use my five substitution options every match. We play football based on certain principles and if everyone does that it is also easy to change”, Ten Hag concluded.
