Siem de Jong’s American football adventure in Major League Soccer has come to an end for the time being. FC Cincinnati has not extended the contract of the former Ajax and PSV player, who can be used both as an attacking midfielder and as a striker.
The 31-year-old De Jong announced his employer’s decision via Instagram. “It was a difficult year,” he writes, “but to complain about it in 2020 feels unnecessary. I will never forget the people I have worked with. I want to thank everyone and wish them the best for the future.”
In February, De Jong exchanged Ajax for FC Cincinnati, the club where Jaap Stam has been the trainer since May. It was not a success. He played in sixteen games, but was unable to convince with zero goals and zero assists. Cincinnati finished at the bottom of the Eastern Conference.
The six-time international, who won the national championship four times during a previous period at Ajax (2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014) and won the Australian title with Sydney FC (2019), can look for a new club transfer-free thanks to the step of Cincinnati.
