NBA 2K21 introduces an all-new multiplayer hub called the “City,” and developer Visual Concepts says it is “many, many times” bigger than the Neighborhoud of the Park from previous games and the current-gen version.
Visual Concepts started with NBA 2K14 the idea of a social hub where players could play basketball on the street, as well as some crazy mini-games. This eventually expanded to “the Neighborhoud”, an even bigger hub with new changes every season. Watch the first images of the City below in the trailer.
Visual Concepts says the City is “many, many times bigger” than previous Neighborhoods. The City is divided into several districts, all run by rival Affliations. Visual Concepts mentions that “hundreds” of players populate every part of the City.
“The City is our most ambitious implementation of a virtual basketball community … ever,” said Visual Concepts executive producer Erick Boenisch in a lengthy blog post.
Players start in Rookieville, a dock community where they must prove themselves against other MyPLAYERS before they can access the City. The four boroughs governed by Affliations have their own unique aesthetics and unique basketball courts that should usher in a new way of progression.
The City also has an Event Center area, a giant shining building that hosts all new and recurring events, and competitions between different Affliations. LED screens and lighting determine the mood that the Event Center radiates based on the occasion.
Visual Concepts also introduces “Garage Hoops”, which are basketball rings distributed around the map. Shoot in a pile and other players can participate in different modes. It’s a simple addition, but according to Visual Concepts, players can earn some extra VC in the first five games they play every day.
The City also includes a quest system with NPCs, with a series of single-player 3v3 games, and another series of quests that will encourage you to keep exploring the city and playing games outside of the Warehouse.
Other features are:
- A rebuilt Gatorade training facility where players can train or rent courts to play indefinitely.
- Larger 4v4 and 5v5 courts, including a Kobe Bryant tribute court with the snakeskin design and a large mural.
- After winning 10 Affiliation games, the reigning team’s ball catches fire as a signal to players to knock them off the throne.
- Pink Diamond Plaza: A neon pink court where the MyTeam Triple Threat mode takes place.
- Apparel stores where you can buy cosmetic items for your avatar. This includes brands like Nike, Jordan, Adidas and more.
Players participating in the Affiliations feature will be randomly assigned one after proving themselves in Rookieville, but can request a transfer after which their reputation level will be reset. Players receive more Rep points when they play on a court of their Affiliation, and each Affiliation can participate in tournaments to crown themselves as Kings of the City.
Certain players even become mayor of a district. The first four are determined by Visual Concepts but after that they can change every six weeks.
These aren’t the only additions to the next-gen version of NBA 2K21, the game also uses the adaptive triggers and haptic feedback in combination with the DualSense on the PS5.
