Five of the region’s nine hospitals are currently on admission stops for corona patients. This confirms the Regional Consultation Acute Care (ROAZ). These are Maasstad Hospital, Franciscus Gasthuis and Ikazia Hospital in Rotterdam, IJsselland Hospital in Capelle aan den IJssel and Albert Schweitzer in Dordrecht. In some hospitals, the admission stop may apply all night. “This is a really serious situation,” said one of the spokespersons.
The admission stop in Maasstad Hospital has been in effect since 5:30 pm on Monday afternoon, a spokesman reports. Non-corona patients with other urgent complaints can therefore still go.
The IJsselland Hospital has also had an admission stop since the beginning of the evening. Both the intensive care unit and the hospital’s special corona wards are overcrowded, the spokesman said. In addition, the high level of absenteeism among staff plays an important role.
The third hospital that currently has an admission stop is Albert Schweitzer in Dordrecht. “The stop is due to the fact that several patients are waiting at the ER who have to transfer to hospital beds, while there are none,” says the spokesperson for the Dordrecht hospital. “It is expected that some will have to sleep in the emergency room next night, because we will not be able to place them elsewhere for the next few hours.”
The Franciscus Gasthuis in Rotterdam is also currently closed to new corona patients. “The number of covid patients has skyrocketed today. Hence this admission stop,” said a spokesman.
The director of the Ikazia Hospital confirms that this hospital has also instituted an admission stop since 19:00. This applies until at least 11 p.m.
According to the safety region, it is checked every hour whether the other hospitals can receive patients again.
Recently, it has become more common for hospitals to stop admission or close the emergency room. The Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Dordrecht even switched to a 24-hour admission stop last week, due to a shortage of beds and excessive absenteeism among staff.
The Beatrix Hospital in Gorinchem says that there is currently no admission stop there. “But we are bracing ourselves,” said a spokesman.
