Ajax suffered its first defeat of the season in the Women’s Eredivisie on Sunday. After seven victories in a row, the leader was lost at FC Twente 2-1.
Ajax still started the match well. Marjolijn van den Bighelaar opened the score on Sportpak Het Diekman after half an hour after being shot in the defense of FC Twente.
The home team curiously tied the score ten minutes later. Stefanie van der Gragt got the ball from a corner on her head and surprised her own keeper Lize Kop. Van der Gragt also scored an own goal in the opening game of the season, also against Twente.
Just like last week against PSV (3-2), Fenna Kalma crowned herself the match winner in the second half. After more than an hour of play, the FC Twente striker ran away from her opponent and pushed the ball into the goal from close by on a pass from Bente Jansen.
Despite the defeat, Ajax remains at the top of the Women’s Eredivisie with 21 points from 8 matches. PSV has three points less. FC Twente is also back in the title fight with sixteen points.
