The visitors initially took the initiative, and it was thanks to the post that midfielder Bruno Fernandes did not give his team the lead after fifteen minutes. However, Southampton took the lead at the first opportunity. Polish defender Jan Bednarek headed a corner behind goalkeeper David de Gea. Ten minutes later, free-kick specialist James Ward-Prowse doubled the score with his third free kick this season.
In the second half, United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjær changed twice: the injured De Gea was replaced by Dean Henderson and striker Edinson Cavani also entered the field for Mason Greenwood. The latter turned out to be a golden intervention by the Norwegian trainer, because Cavani ensured the turnaround in the game with an assist on midfielder Fernandes and two goals. Cavani’s winning goal came in injury time.
With the third victory in a row, United climbs with 16 points to seventh place in the Premier League, one point away from Southampton. That team is fifth.
Chelsea and Tottenham do not score in a disappointing top match
The top match between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur ended without goals: 0-0. The home team was unable to disassemble the defense well-organized by Spurs coach José Mourinho.
Hakim Ziyech (Chelsea) and Steven Bergwijn (Tottenham Hotspur) both faced each other with a starting place. In the first twenty minutes, the chances followed each other quickly. Bergwijn shot right over Chelsea’s goal, after which Chelsea striker Timo Werner thought to give his team the lead shortly afterwards. However, he did so in an offside position, which resulted in the goal being disallowed.
The visitors then dug in and played expectantly. Ziyech and his teammates had by far the most ball possession, but hardly managed to create danger. The Moroccan international had a good shooting opportunity after more than an hour, but the former Ajax player shot over. In the final phase, Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris had to save an attempt by Mason Mount.
With the point from the derby, Tottenham leads the Premier League on the basis of a better goal difference than Liverpool. Chelsea is third with 19 points.
Wolves win at Arsenal, worry about head injury at Jimenez
Wolverhampton Wanderers has won the away game at Arsenal 2-1. Nevertheless, the team of trainer Nuno Espirito Santo left the field with great concern because of the apparently serious head injury at striker Raúl Jimenez.
The first half was stopped for about ten minutes due to the injury at Jimenez. The Mexican hit his head hard with Arsenal defender David Luiz’s head early in the game. Where Luiz was able to resume the first half, the Wolverhampton player remained silent on the field. He eventually left the field on a stretcher and was given oxygen in the meantime.
In the remainder of the first half, which had ten minutes of injury time, three goals were scored. Pedro Neto put Wolves ahead, after which Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes leveled again three minutes later. Daniel Podence gave the visitors the lead again just before half-time.
In the second half, Arsenal pushed more and got two big chances through substitute Reiss Nelson and striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. There were no more goals. The team of trainer Mikel Arteta is in fourteenth place in the English league. Wolverhampton is in the subtop with 17 points.
