The European Union has also signed a contract with vaccine developer Moderna, the European Commission announced Wednesday. It is the sixth vaccine developer with which the EU has concluded a contract.
Moderna will deliver 80 million doses to the EU once the vaccine is approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA). In addition, the EU has the option to purchase an additional 80 million doses.
The Netherlands receives 3.89 percent of all vaccines, which means that the Netherlands receives more than three million doses of the Moderna vaccine. A vaccination consists of two doses.
Earlier this month Moderna reported that the injection is more than 94 percent effective. The investigation is currently in the final phase.
The vaccination should be kept at a temperature of -20 degrees, but the vaccine can keep for a month in a refrigerator. Moderna expects that the first injections can be delivered in the first or second quarter of 2021.
