The Dutch Juniors, which were already certain of the European Championship in 2021, lost the last group match in Portugal on Wednesday-evening.

Both teams played fully on the win. That attitude resulted in an attractive and at times grim match, at a fast pace, with a lot of commitment and fighting spirit, and the necessary scoring opportunities. Portugal was slightly sharper in the rounding off.

Fábio Vieira gave the home team the lead after two minutes. Cody Gakpo put the Juniors in Portimão on the same level just before half-time. Eight minutes after the break, however, Vieira was again accurate.

National coach Erwin van der Looi chose the vanguard Myron Boadu-Justin Kluivert. Kaj Sierhuis, who both times made a hat-trick in the last two international matches, had to settle for a place on the reserve bench.

End of winning streak

With the defeat in Portugal, the long winning streak of the Dutch Juniors came to an end. The team won 12 games in a row.

Both teams finished the qualifying series on 27 points. The Jong Oranje became group winner on the basis of mutual results. The game in Doetinchem, the Netherlands won 4-2 in October.

The 2021 European Championship will be finished in two parts, mainly in Hungary and Slovenia.
