Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition Review – Capcom pakt uit

Brotherly love

While Dante, Nero and the demonic scum are the equivalents for the crust, cheese, tomato and toppings of a good pizza, the delicious slice has another important part before you can eat it: a good pizza cutter. Capcom is now bringing it to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X / S as the main part of the Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition. We are of course talking about Dante’s twin brother Vergil.

He first emerged as a playable character in Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition and has since become indispensable. He returned in Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition and was also available as downloadable content in DmC: Devil May Cry. The release of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X / S are the perfect opportunity to bring Virgil back in Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition and not just as a playable character.

For 39.99 euros you get much more than just Vergil as a playable character for a few missions. Vergil is present with its own ‘mode’ in this version of the game, where you go through the entire storyline of Devil May Cry 5 with him and give the hell brood with his unique weapons a one-way trip back to hell. Where the standard mode of Devil May Cry 5 forces you to switch between Dante, Nero and V, the Vergil mode of the Special Edition does this differently. Vergil is the character you have under the buttons from start to finish.

Plays like a new game

Vergil feels like a breath of fresh air with this. With Dante and Nero you already have over-the-top action with swords, the Devil Trigger and of course the guns of the two men, and V has his summonable creatures that get rid of demons, but Vergil does it differently. He has a super-fast katana Yamato that he uses to cut enemies into pieces. It does slightly less damage and has a slightly smaller range, but it is faster and gives the opportunity to make larger combos.

His other weapons, the powerful Beowulf gloves and boots, the Mirage Blade and Mirage Edge, complement his arsenal so that you can tackle every situation differently and create combos that you say against. That SS-rank is made with him under the buttons just as fast as that One Punch Man takes out his enemies. Remote attacks have not disappeared and provide the necessary variety, but guns are not for Vergil.

Vergil’s ‘Devil Trigger’ is slightly different. Instead of turning into a demonic version of himself, he calls one Doppelganger which duplicates every attack. That means extra damage and even more action on your screen. To complete the party, Vergil can briefly change to V and then release all the beasts on the enemies. Vergil is delicious with a capital V!

The disadvantage of Vergil is that he is a character that does not lend himself to every boss fight. In some levels you notice that you are really dealing with a boss who is made for the forces of V or the attacks of Nero. Very occasionally this results in some crazy situations where you have to improvise. It is a small point of criticism that you can easily ignore.

Vergil will also be coming to the Xbox One and PS4 versions of the game in December as DLC for around $ 5. A switch is therefore not immediately necessary if you only go for Vergil. Of course this is the case if you want to have all the other benefits of this version.

All content available immediately

The Special Edition of Devil May Cry 5 comes with all the content that the game has. That means a slew of additional weapons for Nero, including Mega Man’s Mega Buster and the EX colors for each character that were in the earlier Deluxe version of Devil May Cry 5. Although it is nice that you suddenly get everything, a small disadvantage comes around the corner.

When you first come into Nico’s van to buy your upgrades, you will be presented with all these weapons for just under ten minutes. Nico will then repeatedly stoop to get a new weapon from under her counter. And although Nico doesn’t look bad, after about four times this animation, which is always exactly the same, gets boring. Moreover, you immediately have a number of strong weapons with you, making it a bit easy with Nero to bridge some pieces in the game.

Devils also howl on next-gen

In addition to Vergil, Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition has had the necessary upgrades to shine on next-gen just as the game did when it first came out. The game already looked fantastic, but now features a higher frame rate and even slicker graphics in 4K. In addition, the lighting in the game has been improved and provided with ray tracing. The frame rate is unfortunately not available on all consoles, but only on Series X and PlayStation 5. Moreover, it is true that ray tracing automatically switches off if you choose a higher frame rate. Loading times on all platforms have always been reduced to a fraction of what they were, so you can keep playing wonderfully smoothly.

The upgrades you get are already a lot for the amount of 39.99 euros that you pay for this version, but do not make such a big difference with the original game that you have to do it immediately. The other options of the Special Edition do more for this. You can also get started in this version with the Bloody Palace mode, in which you have to kill hordes of increasingly difficult enemies, the Turbo mode, in which the action is even more intense and the Legendary Dark Knight difficulty level.

The latter is like throwing hot peppers on your pizza and really throwing the heat on you. Enemies come at you in greater numbers, deal more damage and are a lot tougher. For seasoned Devil May Cry fans this is great, but for everyone else it means that the game turns into a kind of Dark Souls that does not turn the title of Devil May Cry in Player May Cry. Get that glass of milk ready to take off the spicy edges!

Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition Review – mouthwatering chopping on next-gen

Dr. Oetker could not have made it better. Capcom is stepping into the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X / S in style. Devil May Cry 5 doesn’t just deliver a visual upgrade that lets you experience the power of next-gen. In addition, there is a huge addition to the game that can be called the main reason to get started with the game: Vergil.

He is the reason for fans of the first hour to play the entire game again. In addition, the total package of the Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition is reason enough for all new players to buy the game. Especially with the mediocre launch line-up that we currently know for the Series X / S.

The pros and cons

  • Vergil really is a boss!
  • New difficulty level is challenging
  • Next-gen upgrades are not always available
  • Animation of Nico gets bored
