Corona in West Flanders: further downward trend

The number of patients with COVID-19 in Belgian hospitals has dropped to less than 4,000, according to data from health institute Sciensano on Sunday. Sundays are still lying 3,993 people with COVID-19 in the hospital. That is one decrease of 20 percent compared to a week earlier.

The past seven days were daily average 239 people admitted to hospital. That is one decrease by 24 percent. In total have been since March 42,174 people hospitalized.

Last week, 2,280 patients were able to leave the hospital. Of the 3,993 sick there are still lying 967 on intensive care. That number is down 234, or 19 percent, from a week earlier.

The other indicators also indicate that the epidemic in Belgium is losing strength. Thus, from November 19 to 25 an average of 2,484 infections daily registered with the coronavirus, a sharp decrease of 42 percent.

In the same period passed away daily an average of 141 people, a decrease of 19.2 percent. Since the beginning of the epidemic have been in Belgium 574,448 infections established. 16,461 people have now died after being infected. The positiviteitsratio has also fallen to 10.9 percent.

Towards 500 at Christmas

According to virologist Steven Van Gucht, it is possible that by Christmas we will have an average of 500 infections per day. That is still five times higher than at the end of June, when we were at the beginning of the summer. Van Gucht therefore emphasizes that we are facing a challenging winter period. The contamination figures may even be slightly higher in the end-of-year period, because more extensive testing has started this week.

The Consultation Committee yesterday presented the measures for the coming weeks. You can read what they decided here. They can count on the support of that other virologist, Marc Van Ranst: “Maintaining strict measures during the end-of-year period is evidence of common sense and decisiveness.
