Bjarne Riis is stepping down from his position as general manager of NTT Pro Cycling. The former Danish Tour winner has been with the South African WorldTour team since the beginning of this year, which is looking for a buyer due to financial problems.
NTT Pro Cycling announced the news on Wednesday. “I want to thank Bjarne for his experience and leadership and for what he has taught us. I wish him the best for the future ”, says team principal Douglas Ryder.
“Being part of NTT Pro Cycling during a unique year was a great experience for all of us”, Riis responds. “I have a lot of respect for the team that Doug has built and would like to thank him for this opportunity. I wish him the best for the future. ”
Talks about a possible partial acquisition of NTT Pro Cycling by Riis and its partners, Jan Bech Andersen and Lars Seier Christensen, have also since been halted.
Finally, the team emphasizes “to keep fighting to ensure the future”. Last week, the UCI international cycling union confirmed that NTT Pro Cycling, Victor Campenaerts’ South African employer, is the only one of the current WorldTour teams that has not (yet) submitted an application to be part of the top class of cycling in 2021.
