The average number of daily new infections with the coronavirus decreased by four percent between 25 and 31 October compared to the previous week. This is evident from the preliminary data from the Sciensano health institute on Wednesday. This seems to be a possible turnaround, but the pressure on hospitals remains very high.
In the last week of October, an average of 14,235.4 infections per day was recorded. That is a decrease of 4 percent compared to a week earlier. The positivity ratio – the percentage of corona tests that yield a positive result – now averages 28.8 percent. This has decreased in recent days.
The average number of hospital admissions continues to increase. Over the past seven days, an average of 692.4 people were hospitalized daily, an increase of 26 percent. On Tuesday, November 3, even 877 corona patients were admitted. There are already 7,485 patients in Belgian hospitals, 1,351 in an intensive care unit.
An average of 136.3 people per day die from the consequences of a corona infection. There are no fewer than 75 more every day than a week earlier. The total number of deaths in Belgium has passed the 12,000 mark: it now stands at 12,126. In one day that total has grown by no less than 268.
