Three out of ten corona cases in Flanders do not know where they got infected

Many people who contract corona have no idea where they got infected. This is evident from new data from the Flemish contact survey.

From now on, Flemish cities and municipalities will receive a daily update with the substantive results of the contact tracing. It is the detailed information of the corona detectives who ask people where they think they have been infected and where they have been in the contagious period before the start of their isolation.

The results cover the period between September 1 and October 13. It is striking that no fewer than 35 percent (1,669 out of 4,788) of people indicate that they have no idea where they became infected. Where they do suspect, the family shows up most often (14%). Work (13%), friends (8%), sports (6%), catering (4%), travel (2%) and parties (1%) are also mentioned. The fact that relatively few people suspect that they are infected in the catering industry does not provide any assurance that the risk of infection is effectively low there. But it is not unimportant now that the governments of our country are seriously considering closing the hospitality industry due to another fierce corona outbreak.

Visit to catering industry

Three in ten people who tested positive say to the corona detectives that they have visited the catering industry during their contagious period.

The Flemish Care Agency also listed where people said they still went during their contagious period before the start of the isolation. No fewer than three in ten say they have visited the catering industry, followed by sports activities (27.5%). At a much greater distance, wellness (4.6%), fitness (4.3%), parties (3.2%), hotels, B & Bs and campsites (1.7%), swimming pool or playground (1.8 %), religious ceremonies (1.6%), cinemas, theaters and concerts (1.4%) and amusement, nature and animal parks (1.3%). Just one person indicates to have been to the casino.
