DOETINCHEM – A 25-year-old man from Doetinchem was arrested Tuesday morning on suspicion of money laundering and fraud. He, along with two others, is said to have stolen tens of thousands of euros by exchanging pin terminals of a supermarket delivery service.
The three men managed to strike fourteen times between March 30 and May 16 last year, the police say.
Always the same scam trick
All those times they struck with the same trick: they called the unsuspecting meal deliverer on the way to customers and said they were from the head office. The caller always said that the pin terminal needs an update, after which it always came to an appointment.
During those appointments, the terminal was switched so that the delivery person used a different device afterwards. The money that was pinned to the door was then diverted to the account of a cat catcher.
The supermarket chain has therefore lost tens of thousands of euros. In addition to the Doetinchemmer, a 20-year-old man from Delft and a 26-year-old man from The Hague were also arrested. More arrests may follow, police said. It has not been disclosed which supermarket chain it concerns.
Attention in Investigation Requested
Earlier this year, the Investigation Requested program devoted attention to the fraudulent practices. Then several useful tips came in. The police tracked down the suspects through extensive investigation.
The suspects are in custody. They may only have contact with their lawyer.
