Many e-scooters are unsafe and unreliable. This is shown by research by the Belgian Test Achats. “There is a good chance that you will go home with a bad buy, many models can be described as junk”, it sounds. The consumer organization insists on strict controls.
The e-scooter has appeared on the streets in recent years. It is prohibited in the Netherlands, but you will find them everywhere abroad. Consumer organization Test Achats decided to subject eleven frequently sold models to a quality survey. Both in laboratory conditions and on the street, the scooters were checked for capacity, reliability and safety, among other things.
Overall, Test Achievement was able to determine that there are major differences between the e-scooters available on the market. One model only got 24 points out of 100, while the best device in the test scored a decent 70/100. In terms of problems, Test Achats saw tires that were very difficult to inflate, battery holders that were broken, displays that were missing or illegible, steering systems that were totally unstable and folding mechanisms that were not manageable in practice.
Not in heavy rain
Most e-scooters cannot be used in heavy rain showers. The manufacturers themselves already report this in their manual, but it is also apparent from the test by Test Achats. After a brake test, for which the e-scooters were given a short shower, two models were found to no longer work at all. The brake test led to dangerous situations for other scooters. “A lot of models can actually be described as junk”, spokesman Jens Van Herp concludes. “There is a good chance that you will go home with a bad buy.”
One model, the Kugoo S1 Pro, was completely excluded from the test even on closer inspection. On paper, the scooter did not comply with the legal provision that states that the permitted top speed within the European Union is 25 kilometers per hour. In the meantime, the producer complies with this rule again.
Price not a clear indication
Test Achats advocates stricter checks on the quality and reliability of e-scooters. The consumer organization emphasizes that buyers should not always be guided by the price. “Most scooters cost between 300 and 400 euros, but there are also those that are a lot cheaper or more expensive. Still, the price is not always reflected in the results, “said Test Achats.
The use of the e-scooters causes many unclear situations on the roads, according to Test Achats. Anyone who uses a scooter is considered a cyclist as soon as that person drives faster than walking pace. This means that he has to drive on the cycle path or on the right side of the road. But as soon as you walk at walking pace, you are a pedestrian and you are expected to drive on the sidewalk.
