Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s attorneys were given a 40-day extension today (Thursday) in filing a response to the indictment filed against him. This is after earlier today they submitted to the court a request to postpone the date of submission of the answer. After the extension, the defense team must present their response by November 29 – and not by October 18.
Prime Minister’s attorneys argued in their motion that because the court had not yet decided whether to hand over to them the additional investigative materials they had demanded, they had to wait to know how to proceed at the evidentiary stage.
In their application to the court, the lawyers argued that a reminder hearing should be held as early as possible before filing a response to the indictment. According to the defense team, if there is no such discussion they will not be able to answer properly. The hearing on the question of the investigation materials is scheduled for November 15.
As you may recall, in July the court ruled that the evidentiary phase of Netanyahu’s trial will begin in January 2021, and that the trial will be held 3 times a week – on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Prime Minister’s attorneys responded: “Contrary to the allegations, this is not a request for a postponement but a request to schedule a hearing for a closer date that will avoid the need for a postponement later.”
