Majority of Dutch people do not trust 18-year-olds ‘free’ of 10,000 euros from Jesse Klaver

Few Dutch people seem to have faith in GroenLinks’ plan to give young people 10,000 euros on their eighteenth birthday. 85 percent think 18-year-olds cannot be smart with their money yet. Only eleven percent believe in the young. This is shown by research by the Heart of the Netherlands panel among more than 3,500 participants.

Earlier today, GroenLinks presented a plan to give young people a ‘starting capital’ without conditions. The intention is that young people invest this money in their future. Millionaires have to cough up the 2.2 billion euros that this plan has to cost in total through taxation.

Not smart

If it is up to people aged 24 and older, the plan will be canceled. Because only 11 percent think that young people will be smart with that money. 85% of the respondents in this group think that the young people have just poured the money through.

It was to be expected, the youngest group of the panel is more positive about receiving the free 10,000 euros. 30 percent of 18 to 24 year olds would like to see the money go into the account of young people. Yet even in this group the majority is against, 70 percent of those questioned.

Brain not yet developed

University professor of neuropsychology at VU University Amsterdam Jelle Jolles also sees problems in GroenLinks’ plan. According to him, only a few of the young people will handle the money well. The vast majority are not yet able to make the right choices, the professor thinks. “Even though you are old enough to vote and have qualifications, you have not passed life yet,” he told Heart of the Netherlands. “When you are eighteen years old, you do not yet have the knowledge to make the right decision.”

Jolles likes the idea of the party, but he thinks it is better to pay the amount when the young people are around twenty-three years old. Then the brain is fully developed. You spend it at a younger age on the things you know. At eighteen you only know things like a car or a telephone. ”
