Google gadgets are increasingly skipping the Netherlands

It was a great week for Google fans: the company presented two new Pixel phones, a Chromecast with a completely adapted operating system and a smart Nest speaker with better audio quality.

Of all that equipment, only Nest Audio will come to the Netherlands. Here only the old Chromecast will remain in the shops and the Pixel phone will again not be officially released by Google in our country.

Pixels have been skipping us for years

This is nothing new for Google smartphones: they have not been sold here since the first model (published in 2016). The company first wants to become successful in a group of countries. “We are still very new in this field of consumer electronics, so we have to limit the number of countries,” said hardware boss Rick Osterloh, according to NRC.

But that the Chromecast now also skips the Netherlands is striking, given that device has been sold in our country for many years. Technology stores are full of the TV dongle, which gives televisions smart functionality for a few tens.

This happens more often

Perhaps the renewed Chromecast is not yet ready for other countries due to its adapted software. Google has rebranded Android TV operating system to Google TV, with front-page viewing tips from multiple video apps installed. This probably hides the necessary content deals between media and technology companies, which are then concluded country by country.

But at the same time, Google seems to us to completely skip hardware more often. The Google Home Max speaker never appeared here, while the regular Home and the Mini variant are in the shops here. In addition, the Pixel laptops and tablets have never been officially sold here either.

Even the Pixel Buds, Google’s competitor for Apple’s AirPods, are not officially available in our country.

Don’t count on anything

Our country is often low on the priority list of tech companies: it recently turned out that many services from Apple do not immediately appear in our country. Also regrettable, but in many of those cases it will be the turn of the Netherlands at a later date.

However, Google has been selling Pixel phones in other countries for four years now, without a word about the Netherlands. It is slowly becoming very clear that we will not have to count on anything in the near future.

Fortunately, it does not mean that we have to live without those Google gadgets at all, because there are plenty of importers who still bring them to the Netherlands. But that makes them a lot more expensive: the Google Pixel 4a in Germany, for example, costs 340 euros, while the first best Dutch web store offers it for 400 euros. And that in a country where we like to keep a close eye on the money.
