The Coronie district commissioner’s office has been provided with two buses for passenger transport by the Ministry of Public Works and the Bureau of Unity. The means of transport were handed over to Mayor Maikel Winter by OW minister Riad Nurmohamed and Stanley Dijksteel of Bureau Eenheid on Sunday 25 October. Nurmohamed visited the district to inquire about the state of affairs regarding his ministry in the district.

The minister emphasized that the means of transport must be used for the community and not for private purposes. The buses will mainly serve as school transport for students from Coronie to Nickerie until further notice. He pointed to the agreement that has been made. The transfer is arranged between the Ministry in Suriname and the commissariat. In addition, it must also be arranged who will be responsible for maintenance, repairs, petrol, insurance and collection of the funds. The latter is important for bearing the costs.

The minister left the collection to the district commissioner, but asked that everything be properly arranged on paper. The mayor will also have to keep track of where the buses go and by whom they are driven. “We will not allow abuse,” said the minister. He pointed out that the transport of schoolchildren costs money and that the means of transport must therefore be used as intended. The minister also addressed individuals employed in the district at his ministry. He announced personnel reform and according to him everyone will be deployed. However, those who do not want to work will have to hand in 15% of their salary to put in the fund for the buses.

District commissioner Winter asked the minister to pay attention to the infrastructure that is in a deplorable state in the district. According to him, the rehabilitation will provide an impetus for the reconstruction of Coronie. The mayor gave the guarantee that he will also dedicate himself to this with his staff. He expressed his gratitude for the donation of the buses. They will be given a good destination.
