De Jonge investigates quarantine obligation “as a big stick”

Minister De Jonge is examining whether infected people who do not comply with the quarantine rules could possibly be fined. He says he does not want to introduce this remedy for the time being, but he is already looking at whether there are possibilities to punish unwilling people.

“The mandatory imposition of quarantine measures is an extreme step and acts as the proverbial big stick”, the Minister of Health wrote in a letter to the Lower House.

About 10 percent of infected people do not stay at home. And of their close contacts of infected people, 15 percent do not adhere to the corona rules, according to research by Berenschot. “This poses a great risk of further spread, especially if the number of infections continues to increase”, writes Minister De Jonge.

Quarantainegids

The minister is not yet enthusiastic about a quarantine obligation. He prefers to help people pass the time with a quarantine guide. This guide was developed in collaboration with the Red Cross and the Association of Netherlands Municipalities and offers help and support. For example, it contains tips for shopping and for keeping moving at home.

Nevertheless, he is therefore looking to be sure whether there is a national possibility to enforce the quarantine rules, or whether this must be done via the safety regions. In a few weeks, he will inform the House of the results.

De Jonge has also examined whether he can make participation in source and contact research compulsory. But he concludes that this “currently has more drawbacks than benefits.”
