Council for the living environment: city accessible to fewer and fewer people

Housing that is too expensive, inaccessible transport and impoverished public facilities: fewer and fewer people can participate in city life. This is the conclusion of the Council for the Environment and Infrastructure (RLi) in an advisory report published today.

‘The concentrated supply of work, education, care and entertainment attracts people to the city. In order to have access to urban life, you must be able to live in the vicinity, use public facilities and move around. Fewer and fewer people are able to do that, ‘RLi writes.

Transportation is too expensive

Both rental and owner-occupied homes in the city are becoming increasingly expensive. Public facilities such as libraries, healthcare, sports and welfare centers are being cut back and transport to, for example, go to school, work or a hospital is too expensive for many people and takes a lot of time.

In addition to a vulnerable group of people with a low income or a physical or mental disability, there is a new group for whom the city is becoming increasingly less accessible. This concerns, for example, flex workers who cannot obtain a mortgage and who have to pay increasingly higher rent. According to the RLi, this applies to, for example, taxi drivers and cleaners, healthcare personnel and police officers, journalists and account managers. The conclusion is also that there is less and less space for groups that want to develop an initiative together in the city.

Uncontrolled rent increases

In the advice to the Ministers of the Interior and Kingdom Relations and Infrastructure and Water Management, the RLi writes that access to cities must be better guaranteed. More must be invested in public facilities, uncontrolled price increases in the rental sector must be prevented and people’s actual transport options must be better looked at.
