After 260,000 cases in one year: government tackles odometer tampering | Car

The government is going to tackle odometer fraud harder. Devices that can manipulate the counter of a motor vehicle are prohibited and the odometer reading is registered more often. This is reported by the Ministry of Infrastructure.

Thousands of people are the victims of this form of fraud every year, which is particularly common in imported cars. In one in five cars that are brought from Germany, the odometer has been tampered with, the Vereniging Aanpak Tellerfraude (VAT) reported earlier.

Tampering with odometer readings has been punishable since 2014, just like correcting, repairing or replacing an odometer. Nevertheless, the fraud costs about 110 million euros annually in overpaid purchase costs and overdue maintenance.

Illogical position

In 2018, according to VAT, an illogical odometer reading was registered on 264,220 cars. Among other things, there will now be a ban on devices that ensure that no or only a limited amount of kilometers are credited to the counter while driving. With a ban on the import, sale and stocking of these devices, fraud must be reduced.

In addition to banning these devices, the registration of meter readings will also be improved. Relatively new vehicles are not yet subject to MOT and often require little or no major repairs or maintenance. Few meter readings are then registered because the number of garage visits is limited. This makes this category of vehicles vulnerable to fraud.

The mandatory registration of the mileage will apply to all repair, maintenance and tire change visits. Now that obligation only applies to repairs above 150 euros. In addition, there will be an obligation for mileage registration for motorcycles when transferring the license plate number and during repairs, maintenance and tire changes.
