Three Dutchmen on behalf of Sunweb in Giro | Cycling

Sunweb will go to the Tour of Italy with three Dutchmen, which starts on Saturday in Sicily. Wilco Kelderman and Sam Oomen are the leaders in the Giro, Martijn Tusveld will come along to assist them.

“We are going to Italy with two goals: to achieve a good classification and to achieve stage wins”, sports director Luke Roberts says. Australian Michael Matthews, in his final months at Sunweb before switching to Mitchelton-Scott, has to ensure day success.

The Sunweb team also consists of Australians Chris Hamilton and Jai Hindley, Nico Denz from Germany and the American Chad Haga. He takes the place of the Dane Casper Pedersen, originally appointed for the Giro, who has already raced the Tour de France in recent weeks.

“After a successful restart of the season, with a great Tour, the motivation within the team is very high”, says Roberts. “The boys would like to continue that success in Italy.”

Sunweb went to the Tour without a pronounced leader, but booked three stage victories with the Swiss Marc Hirschi and the Dane Sørgen Kragh Andersen (two). Hirschi will be the leader in the Walloon Arrow on Wednesday and also in Liège-Bastogne-Liège on Sunday, together with the Belgian Tiesj Benoot.

The Giro was initially scheduled to be held in May, but had to be moved for months due to the corona virus. The start is not as planned in Hungary, but in Sicily. The participants start there with an individual time trial over 15.1 kilometers.

Kelderman and Oomen are, just like Matthews, working on their final months with the Iwan Spekenbrink team. Kelderman will switch to Bora-hansgrohe, Oomen will switch to Jumbo-Visma.
