The government approved the extension of the term of office of Acting Commissioner General Moti Cohen and Acting IPS Commissioner Gondar Asher Vaknin as deputies for another six months.

The extension will be valid only if no permanent appointments are made to both positions during the period.

Already two weeks ago, the Minister of Internal Security, Amir Ohana, announced that he intends to extend the term of the two.

Cohen has been acting since Roni Alshikh ended his position nearly two years ago in December 2018.

Vaknin took over as acting commissioner about a month later.

To date, no permanent appointments have been made for the two positions due to the coalition agreement between the Likud and Blue and White, which requires the creation of a joint mechanism for determining the identity of those appointed to senior positions.

About two weeks ago, the previous commissioner, Roni Alsich, claimed that so far he had not been appointed a permanent replacement on purpose.

“There is a deliberate goal of the political echelon not to appoint a commissioner to weaken the police. “The ability of a deputy to be a buffer between law enforcement policy and the political echelon does not exist,” Alshikh claimed in an interview with News 13.

About three weeks ago, in response to a petition by the Movement for Quality of Government, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu informed the High Court that he would not deal with the appointment of a legal adviser to the government, a state attorney and a commissioner. “For the sake of public visibility and without detracting from his claims, he will not deal with the appointment of senior officials,” Netanyahu said in a statement.
