The Civil Administration’s Planning and Licensing Subcommittee today (Tuesday) approved the building permit to make the Cave of the Patriarchs accessible to people with reduced mobility.

The project is expected to include the construction of a special elevator near the Cave of the Patriarchs, and a path that will allow access from the site’s parking lot to the cave plaza.

Minister of Religions: “Great excitement grips me every time”

Several months ago, the Ministry of Defense issued an order expropriating the powers of the Hebron Municipality over the Cave of the Patriarchs. Two objections were filed to the project: the other by the mayor of Hebron and the other by a left-wing organization called ‘Emek Shaveh’.

After the deadline for filing objections to the project, and both objections were rejected, the subcommittee announced tonight, after convening on Thursday, that the project had been approved.

However, this is not a final stage as it is expected that an appeal will be filed against the decision of the subcommittee and after that a petition will be submitted to the High Court – something that will delay, and perhaps even cancel the committee’s approval.
