The lockdown was a huge boost for web shopping. Belgians made 63 percent more transactions at the three most popular web shops – Amazon, Bol.com and Zalando, all three foreign companies – in that period than in 2019 and they spent 83 percent more than a year earlier.

“That has hardly decreased since then,” says Vanden Houte. “During the holiday months, those expenditures were still 53 percent higher than last summer. This indicates that Belgians have shifted from the shopping street to e-commerce to some extent. That seems to be a lasting trend.”
