Tjapko Poppens mayor of Amstelveen published this letter to the residents of the city about the new corona measures of the Cabinet and the Amstelland Safety Region (pdf 24 pages) on September 29, 2020:
The number of corona infections in Amstelveen and our region has increased enormously. More and more people with COVID-19 are also admitted to hospitals. I hear from people in healthcare that they are concerned about the large influx of patients. They have already experienced this and are facing a difficult time. We must do everything we can to prevent elderly and vulnerable people from Amstelveen in particular from becoming seriously ill or even dying.
That is why the national government announced additional measures yesterday, which will apply for at least the next three weeks. For example, meetings in indoor areas of more than 30 people are prohibited, the catering industry closes at 10 p.m. and you are not allowed to receive more than three guests at home. For our region, including Amstelveen, it is also urgent to wear a face mask in shops, cafés and restaurants, museums and government buildings. A complete overview of the measures can be found at www.amstelveen.nl/corona.

If these measures do not lead to a decrease in the number of infections within a few weeks, a new ‘lockdown’ is inevitable. We definitely want to prevent this, because the economic and social consequences of the measures are already serious enough: for (catering) entrepreneurs, for cultural institutions, for sports clubs, for young people who want to get together unhindered and for older people who have to take extra care. with visitors and daily things such as shopping. Fortunately, the schools remain open, but the measures we are now taking are a painful step backward for all of us. The development of the virus leaves us no choice.
Many people adhere to the basic rules. We also see that many catering entrepreneurs, retailers, sports clubs, cultural institutions and other organizations are dealing well with the corona measures. However, as this crisis lasts, we see that it is more difficult for people to comply with the rules. People especially find it more difficult to keep their distance. That is understandable. Unfortunately, it is the main cause of the increasing number of infections. Our behavior determines whether we can push back the virus and prevent a new ‘lockdown’. That is why I urge you to comply again with the 1.5 meters and hygiene guidelines in the near future. I also urge you to limit your social contacts as much as possible.
None of us can turn a blind eye to the dangers of this virus. Nobody can decide for themselves that it has now taken long enough. And no one can still say: ‘it will not happen to me’. You can also be infected with this nasty disease. And your cough or inattention can make someone else very sick or worse. So stay alert. If everyone helps, we will overcome this second wave. Let’s do it for the people in care, for ourselves and for each other. Thank you for your commitment, understanding and patience! Tjapko Poppens mayor of Amstelveen ‘
