This fall, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S will be in stores, if they are still available. Maybe you already have 500 euros ready to make the step to the new generation in November. But what are the alternatives? A decent gaming laptop might be a better investment.

This article is a partner post of Asus ROG. read here what this means.

You can only spend money once, so you want to spend those hard-earned money well. Even though most (gaming) laptops are more expensive than a separate PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X and S, it can still be the most affordable purchase. We’ve listed six reasons why a new laptop might be a smarter choice for you than a new next-gen console.

Game Pass for PC

Microsoft’s Game Pass is becoming a very attractive offer for more and more gamers – including PC gamers. After all, all games from Microsoft also appear on PC and therefore with Game Pass you have unlimited access to games such as Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Gears 5 and Forza Horizon 4. You do not necessarily have to purchase an Xbox for that. But typical PC games such as Age of Empires 3: Definitive Edition, Crusader Kings 3 and Microsoft Flight Simulator are also in the Game Pass library.

The Game Pass offering only promises to get better. Next year, for example, Halo: Infinite will be released immediately on Game Pass (for PC and Xbox) and with the recent takeover of Bethesda by Microsoft it will be a matter of time before all those games appear on Game Pass. From December, you’ll also get all the benefits of EA Play with your Game Pass subscription, including games like Battlefield.

Sony is also bringing games to PC

In addition to Microsoft, Sony is also looking more and more interested in the PC market. This year, Sony already brought top game Horizon: Zero Dawn to PC and it will most likely not stop there. Hermen Hulst said in an interview as the brand new head of Sony’s Worldwide Studios that he was open to new ideas and a business report from the Japanese company also states that Sony wants to bring more games to PC.

No concrete games have yet been announced for PC, but it is clear that the PC is increasingly seen as neutral territory, where games are released that would previously be exclusively for a console.

Streaming is the future

In addition, more and more companies are exploring the possibilities of cloud gaming. The big advantage of this is that games are streamed and you do not have to have powerful (and therefore expensive) hardware yourself. This makes cheaper laptops suddenly become a serious alternative for good gaming.

Platforms such as Google Stadia, PlayStation Now, Project xCloud and GeForce Now make it possible to play games such as Red Dead Redemption 2 and Doom Eternal on relatively simple hardware. Amazon is also mixing in this market with the recently announced Luna. So technology is really on the rise. Who knows, streaming games will soon be just as common as streaming movies and TV series. And so in 5 years’ time you can still play the latest games on the laptop you purchase now.

Choose your own hardware

PCs are a lot more flexible than consoles when it comes to hardware configuration. Although laptops do not allow you to choose or upgrade every component yourself, there are always plenty of different configurations available to suit your budget and preferences. A brand like Asus has compact 14-inch laptops in their Republic of Gamers line, powerhouses with a 17-inch screen and the thickest hardware you can find in the laptop field, and everything in between.

A good middle ground is, for example, the ROG Strix G15. With the latest tenth generation Intel Core i7 and a Geforce RTX 2070 Super, this laptop is powerful enough for the latest games, which also come into their own perfectly on the 144Hz screen. So you don’t have to look for an expensive new TV to fully enjoy your games.

Another advantage of gaming on PC: you choose what you play with. Mouse and keyboard are usually preferred, and with a good gaming mouse next to your laptop you are all set. For those who prefer to play with a controller, there are also no restrictions. The Xbox controller is supported by default with Windows 10, but you can also connect a Dualshock 4 controller or Pro Controller from the Nintendo Switch with Bluetooth. That is no problem with a modern laptop.

Games are cheaper (or even free)

While Sony is increasing the suggested retail prices of their own games with the arrival of the PlayStation 5, PC games are actually always cheaper. Usually, the suggested retail price of brand new games is already lower, and Steam sales have had an almost mythical status among PC gamers for years, because many games are flying over the virtual counter for absolute rock-bottom prices.

Moreover, nowadays there are new free games to score every week in the Epic Game Store. There are regularly big games in between. For example, Sid Meier’s Civilization VI, Borderlands: The Handsome Collection and Grand Theft Auto 5 were already given away in the past. And oh yes, you don’t have to pay extra to play online games. Still saves about 60 euros compared to PS Plus or Xbox Live Gold.

A laptop can do more than just play games

It’s a bit of a business argument, but certainly for the students among us it remains relevant: a laptop can simply do more than just play games. There is a good chance that you will need a laptop anyway to take lectures (online), edit text documents and images, and create PowerPoint presentations. The above mentioned laptops are even powerful enough to edit videos, render animations and start your own live stream on Twitch.tv. Then you might as well combine the useful with the pleasant and go for a good gaming laptop.

Not because you can play games in between lectures, but (ROG) gaming laptops are designed to deliver maximum performance. They have better cooling mechanisms than ‘normal’ laptops, a better screen and often better speakers, which also makes school work a lot more pleasant. And well, come on, being able to play games between lectures is of course also an excellent argument.
