Bruno Majcherek has passed away. The Heerlen singer had been ill for quite some time. Majcherek garnered international fame as the singer of his big 1960 hit Laila.
He performed that song, based on a tango from 1928, with his orchestra, the Regentostars. Shortly after the song Laila he went solo and the orchestra ceased to exist.
Singing cow’s play
Majcherek was born of Polish parents who came to Limburg to work as a cow in the mines. He released eleven LPs, 70 singles and seven CDs. The singer has been on stage for over 50 years. In 2016 he put an end to his active career.
However, recognition from the city of Heerlen for his achievements failed to materialize. The singing cow-drum did not receive a ribbon, no honorary citizenship, let alone a statue or plaque. Although the lack of this kind of recognition bothered him, he did not put it on the big clock.
Bruno Majcherek turned 84 years old.
In 2015 filmmaker Hans Heijnen made the documentary Laila about the hit song. The documentary will be broadcast on L1 TV on Friday, October 2 at 6:30 PM.
