Change email app by default

Since iOS 14, it is possible to change not only the default browser, but also the default email app. Instead of Apple’s own Mail app, you can choose Spark, Hey, Outlook, Gmail or any of the other supported apps. For example, if you want to email a few photos, the standard Apple Mail app will no longer be used, but the app that you have chosen yourself. You can read how this works in the steps below.

Change default email app on iPhone and iPad

This is how you can adjust the default e-mail app:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Go to the email app you want as default (Gmail, Spark, etc.) and tap Default browser app.
  3. Choose one of the apps shown.

Don’t see your favorite app yet (for example Gmail)? Then you have to be patient because the function is still being rolled out and not all apps have been updated yet.

Also good to know: if you want to set Hey, you can also do that via the settings menu of Outlook or one of the other apps mentioned.

Adjust the e-mail app at a later time

After doing this for the first time, you can now also go to Settings> Mail to change the default mail app. The first time, however, it has to be done via the third party app. It may be that after rebooting your device, Mail is set to default again, but you can then change this manually. The Mail app may also be restored with app updates. When updating your favorite app (for example Spark) you will have to check whether the correct preferred app is still set.

You can choose from Hey, Spark, Gmail, Outlook and more. The list will gradually expand as more developers make their browsers suitable. To be able to install them, they must be on your device.
