Furthermore, the wooden back wall and small details of the painting itself need to be replaced. Afterwards, the entire triptych gets a new layer of varnish. “Any manipulation of a work of art entails risks. If you can prevent that at all, you shouldn’t do that,” says curator Wim Hüsken. “But it has to be done now, because there are no other solutions. It will be done very carefully.”
